. it happened at 5:00 a.m. in west virginia just behind the charlestown racetrack. stacey is just back from west virginia with the story. >> reporter: this is a story of unspeakable tragedy and incredible bravery. this is a fire that started in one barn. a witness said it sounded like an explosion and quickly spread to two other barns. trapped inside were 50 racehorses amend the barns burned some nearby horsemen and women, even some charlestown casino workers rescued to try to save the terrified animals. >> if question save a horse's life it is something we do. like a doctor saving a human beings life. we went to the fire an the smoke was too much to go in the barn. >> within minutes of getting the others out the flames were taking over other barns and we were seconds from getting those out. >> they managed to got out 26 horses from that burning barn. the survivors were rounded up and led in to an empty stable that charlestown raceway made available for them. even a few goats that served as companion animals that made it out alive, as well. a total of 27 horses did perish. damage is stimed at 1.
. the fire broke out in ran son, west virginia, near the charleston raceway. we have the details. >> it's really hot. >> the barn just like exploded, a loud noise and the flames were 40, 50 feet above the roof. within a minute and a half there was three barns on fire. >> reporter: donnie poper and a few others happened to be nearby when i a tower of flames lit up the darkness that normally blankets these west virginia stables, but instead of running away, poper and several others ran towards the burning buildings in an effort to save dozens of trapped and terrified race horses. >> you could hear the cries from the horses. they were just neighing at the top of their lungs. >> they were panicky. we just turned them loose and there was people that stopped their cars, not even horsemen, a lot of people from the casino. >> reporter: their bravery saved over 20 horses, but 27 perished. the fire chief said the 100- year-old barn that once stood here just burned too quickly to save most of the animals. >> heavy fire load, lots of straw, hay. there's nothing to stop it. once it was going it just
at stories making headlines this morning. a lorton, virginia, community mourning the loss of a young mother and two of her children. they were killed in a house fire yesterday. 24-year-old ally anderson was able to save three of her five kids by lowering them down to her uncle on the ground. >>> theresa lewis will be executed in virginia tonight. the first punishment of this type for a woman in the commonwealth in a century. she was sentenced to death for providing sex and money to two men who killed her husband and her stepson back in october of 2002. so far the governor has decided not to grant clemency. lewis is scheduled to be put to death by ion at 9:00 p.m. at a correctional facility in jarrett. >>> gray and michelle rhee scheduled to meet. it will be a closed discussion at city hall at noon today. gray has said that her future in the position would lie heavily based on this conversation today. >>> 7:16 right now. got some city business. now some business that all of us are going to want to listen to. >> hot and humid. we're going to have to open up the pools again. >> why do they shu
